Bliss and Literacy

People ask, “Why Blissymbolics?” “Why should non-speaking persons go to the trouble of learning to use Blissymbolics?”

The brief answer is that using Blissymbols gives the user full access to grammar and expressing their intended meaning to their communication partners. Blissymbols also give the user the experience of analyzing the visual elements (Bliss-characters) contained in Bliss-words. This type of visual processing provides excellent preparation for decoding print words.

Using Bliss is a useful step in climbing the “literacy ramp” from communicating with pictures to full literacy. See The AAC Literacy Ramp by Shirley McNaughton for more detailed information.
