ABOUT BLISSYMBOLICS

Blissymbolics is a semantic language based on a graphic language developed by Charles K. Bliss and is used world-wide by persons who are non-speaking to facilitate communication. The language, which is similar to written Chinese, is meaning based. Bliss-characters and Bliss-words are graphic representations of the concept behind words not a phonetic representation of spoken language. This makes the language easier to learn than traditional orthography (writing). Because it is easier to learn, it has become the first acquired language of a great many non-speaking persons world-wide. It is a complete language with over 3,000 Bliss-words and characters, and it can be used to create complete sentences with correct syntax and punctuation. For many people who learn the language, it serves as a bridge to literacy in text. See www.blissymbolics.org/bliss.shtml
